Some of the soldiers were listed in the Veterans' Graves Registration project. "Beginning in the 1930s, the Works Progress Administration (WPA) undertook a project to register all veterans' graves in each state; however, not all counties in each state participated, so the registers are often incomplete." [Carmack] Soldiers known to be in the Massachusetts Graves Register (VGR) are marked with an asterisk (*).

The National Archives has the Card Records of Headstones Provided for Deceased Union Civil War Veterans, CA. 1879-CA. 1903, soldiers found in these records are marked with a plus sign (+).

Other soldiers were found using the Nationwide Gravesite Locator run by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs National Cemetery Administration. Soldiers found using that system are marked with an octothorpe (#). And still others were found through the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War and their grave registration project; these are marked with a double asterisk (**). Other references are in brackets [] and are listed at the end.

Service records for these soldiers were copied from the book Massachusetts Soldiers, Sailors and Marines in the Civil War.

Notes:

Note 1 - There were two William Park Jrs. who served during the Civil War from the greater Boston area. The City of Newton (MA) incorrectly identified the service record of the Park from Newton and G.A.R. Post 62 in the Veterans' Graves Registration project. They stated that their Park was with the 9th Mass. Vol. Lt. Arty; he served in the U.S. Navy during the war. The 9th Battery Mass. Vols.' Park was from Boston and G.A.R. Post 113.

Note 2 - The Hampton National Cemetery records list Henry Noble as an alias. The Nationwide Gravesite Locator lists him as "Burnham, Henry, Buried at: Section C Site 8302". Interment.net [Johnson] lists him as "Burnham, Henry, d. 05/07/1902, PVT B 9 BATTY MASS LA, Plot: 8302" and "Noble, Henry, d. 05/07/1902, CO B 9TH BATTY MASS LT ARTY, See Card Burnham, Henry, Plot: 8302". His pension record is also recorded under the name of Henry Burnham; application number 952282 and certificate number 686069 filed in the state of Maine.

Note 3 - The WPA Veterans' Grave Registration project recorded Charles A. Hall buried at Mount Feake Cemetery in Waltham as a soldier from the 9th Battery Mass. Vols. The Charles A. Hall buried at this Watham cemetery was with the 1st New Hampshire Heavy Artillery. This was confirmed by the Waltham Evening News obituary and a G.A.R. Post 29 Roster booklet dated 1892. The Graves Registration Officer mixed the two soldier's information, most is correct except for these errors: the Battery (9th) and place of birth (North Wayne).

Note 4 - The Western Cemetery in Portland Maine listed John S. Richardson of the 9th Battery Mass. Vols. as being buried in the Hilborn Tomb. Researching his history for a replacement gravestone, it was discovered that the cemetery recorded his death as December 11, 1861. This date was confirmed by the Portland City Clerk's Office and his obituary appearing in the Portland Transcript, December 18, 1861. This Richardson could not have been with the Battery as John S. Richardson served from December 16, 1863 until June 15, 1865. Also, the 1890 Veterans Schedules list him as living in Deering, Maine.

Note 5 - The WPA Veterans' Grave Registration project recorded Austin A. Packard buried at Melrose Cemetery in Brockton as a soldier from the 9th Battery Mass. Vols. The cemetery records and gravestone list his birth year as 1852 and death year as 1898. Austin A. Packard died of wounds, he received at Gettysburg, on September 20, 1863 at North Bridgewater, Mass. Also, he was 39 when he enlisted which would put his year of birth at 1823 (about).
