On July 3 the battery only had two guns in position. The 3" rifles would have to be Ordnance rifles, as the 3" Parrott wasn't delivered to the Union army until 1864 (production started in 1863). After July 4, the 9th Battery Mass. Vols. becomes a four gun battery until April 24, 1864.

Randy Forbus reference: the Battles of: Wilderness -- May 5-7, 1864, Spotsylvania Court House -- May 8-21, 1864, North Anna -- May 23-26, 1864, and Totopotomoy Creek [Bethesda Church] -- May 28-30, 1864 were fought with the above order with the exception of the New York Light, 11th Battery which was only listed for the Wilderness. The Richmond Campaign, Virginia -- 5 May - 15 June 1864 (including: Wilderness, Spotsylvania, North Anna, Cold Harbor, Sheridan's Raids) has the above order of battle.

Note: According to the History of the Ninth Massachusetts Battery by Levi Baker, the battery turns in two guns on May 16, 1864 and remain a 4 detachment battery until October 22, 1864, when it is reorganized as a 6 detachment battery. They receive the two additional guns on November 5, 1864. According to Colonel Charles S. Wainwright in his personal journals (A Dairy of Battle, edited by Allan Nevins) on October 23, 1864, "I have today got six more light twelve-pounders, so as to increase "D" and "H" First New York and the Ninth Massachusetts batteries to six guns each: ..."
